My list is coming later this week.
I’ll give you a later round want on my list right now and that is Kocha Delic, a center for the Sudbury Wolves. I’ve been watching some Sudbury games since I got back from vacation on Saturday.

Dave's a mess wrote: Tue May 17, 2022 11:50 am Interestingly the Blues haven't taken a D in the first round since Schmaltz in 2012. There were 2 years where they picked a D in the second round when they didn't have a first round pick (Dunn and Vannelli). I wonder if that's a draft philosophy or just kind of the way the board has fallen. Of the first round forwards selected in that timeframe, the good news is that only one of those picks appears to have been a bust, and the better news is that we traded him as part of the Faulk deal (Bokk).

https://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/draft/tea ... 08187.html
And yet our defense isn't atrocious. Unless the guy is going to be an elite dman like Petro was I don't see the Blues feeling any pressure to choose one.
I have to agree. I like to think that BOTH Army's have always chosen who they felt was the best player still on the board, regardless of their team's current NHL roster and overall system's positional balance of high-level prospects. With the 2-4-year development period to become NHL-ready for most draftees, it's not a wise move to draft for position, especially during the first couple rounds. Only if the highest two players on your board are a need position and best player available, and are almost exactly equal in expected value to your team, should you choose the player at the position of need (IF he is deemed SLIGHTLY less likely to be as good as the other (e.g. just about a toss-up) ). Otherwise, ALWAYS choose The BPA). Defencemen take longer to develop. So, given that fact, they are more of a gamble. So drafting one for need is even more of a gamble. I would NEVER do that. Army is good at trading, and that and free agency are the best routes towards getting franchise defencemen, when one doesn't fall into your lap over a 4 or 5 year drafting period.

Wright has been planted as the #1 pick since he was 15. That would ben such a Montreal thing to do. Wright is the safer pick and he's a center, crazy to think they will gamble it on a winger that made a late rise. He's been absolutely invisible in two WJC tourney's playing against the best peers in his age group. They are going to select him because he dominated against a bunch of NHL has beens? Crazy talk.....
Guess they think they are going to make up for passing on Tkachuk....i don't see it though. If they pass on Wright they will regret it forever, more importantly, Army should call New Jersey and get something worked out.

Can't imagine the fan reaction if after needing a #1 C for a generation or so, they pass on one when they finally have the number 1 pick. I hope they do it just for the chaos.
...but whatever, the Blues won the Cup!!!!!

Pronman just dropped his final mock draft today. It's based on what he's hearing, not what he'd actually do. You'd have a hard time guessing what spot Shane Wright goes:
https://theathletic.com/3400291/2022/07 ... inal-2022/
He had the Blues taking Ryan Chesley, RHD. I think that's the same pick he had in his last mock as well, so it would seem there's genuine interest if he's still around.

I don’t think Chesley will be there when we pick. If Ohgren is there at 23, I could see him being a real option.
Firkus is still my guy at #23

If he is there though at 23, are you a fan?
On Chesley….not really. He’s a solid player and he’s going to play college hockey for 2-3 years for sure. Just not enough flash there for me. I would be disappointed if he’s the pick. You need guys like him to help win though but I’m not picking him at 23.

Regarding Blues rumors today, here's a round up of everyone's favorite Blues writer's draft day rumor post:
-Tarasenko chatter is real, may or may not be today but possibly soon.
-Carolina has been interested from the start, Florida interest from Tarasenko's side legit.
-Didn't say much on Krug other than he hasn't been asked to waive his NTC.
-Serious progress on Perron talks after a bumpy start to negotiations.
-Blues unlikely to move up in draft order, but have explored trading down depending on how picks play out.

Neither team holds a first round pick in this years draft so my guess would be if it's one of those two, it's not happening tonight.

I think at least one of JT Miller and Alex DeBrincat get traded today. New Jersey and Ottawa have been shopping the second and overall picks. My hope for today is that we just see lots of moves. I hope for that every year and rarely does it play out that way, but still. Also I think it'd be fun if the Habs pass on Wright, just because it'd likely result in some chaos right afterwards.

My wildass Blues BS speculation trade that'll never happen today:
Tarasenko and Krug to TOR for Nylander and Sandin. Other pieces and perhaps 3rd team to make numbers work.

Alright...lets get into it. My list of guys i'd like to see the Blues draft. My list is center heavy..no dmen on my list. I like several dmen but not at pick #23.

Jagger Firkus - C/RW- Moose Jaw
One of the most talented players in this draft. Reminds me at times of a mix between Marner and Kane with a little bit of Oshie mixed in.
The big thing for me is his compete level and the fact that he's got a chip on his shoulder. The prospects game for me is a big deal and he didn't disappoint in a game against his top peers. He's on an upward trajectory and this time next year will be one of the most talked about NHL prospects.

Frank Nazar - C - USNTDP - I hate listing players that I don't think the Blues have a chance of drafting but Nazar is the exception. Maybe he falls a few slots and Army can figure out a way to move up a few spots to grab him. Nazar is pure skill, work ethic and a non stop motor...something Blues management is always looking for.

Rutger McGroarty C\W -USNTDP - I've mentioned McGroarty on this board over a year ago when he was trending towards a top 5 pick. He's come back to the pack a little bit and might be available in the 20-30 range. He's an NHL player for sure, and probably going to be a pretty decent one. I would say he's as safe a pick as their is for an NHL career but not like "Boring" safe. There is a lot of upside here for him and he's a goal scorer. Ignore the reports on his skating...he skates good enough to get where he needs to go and he's got great hands.

Luca Del Bel Belluz - C- Mississauga - If there is one guy that I believe will be available at #23 that could have been at the top of my list, it's Del Bel Belluz. He's going to be the perfect 3rd line center, and possibly top 6 player down the road but he will be a very productive NHL 3rd line center affecting both areas of the ice. His hockey sense if off the charts and he's only getting better. He reminds me a bit of Anthony Cirelli in Tampa...that's the kind of player you looking at here.

Here are a couple of later round gems that I'm hoping to see the Blues grab one of them. Can probably get one of these guys in the 4th round.

Kocha Delic - C- Sudbury - I won't lie, he's one of my favorite players in this draft. He's a middle round pick but there is so much potential here...he's very under the radar and not many are talking about him. If there is a guy in this draft that screams St. Louis Blue, it's Kocha Delic. Hockey sense, work ethic, leadership and does whatever it takes to make a difference.

Pano Fimis - C - Niagara - His hockey sense is off the charts, he will likely be a dominant player in the OHL as soon as next year. He needs to develop for sure and his only real negative is skating but he provides all the other intangibles that Blues management looks for in a player.

I really liked what I read on McGroarty the other day. I'd be real happy if we get this guy. Sounds like Firkus might be that Home Run pick I've been talking about. We need a goal scorer. A top 7 value pick taken down later in the draft.
