Re: News and Games around the NHL
7776As of tonight, no Eastern Conference teams have officially been eliminated from the NHL playoffs. The Western Conference has eliminated five.
I turned it on about 7 seconds before he scored. What a snipe. Glad he got it done with a goalie in net from his spot.
Such a cool sports moment to witness live. Glad you caught itDave's a mess wrote: Sun Apr 06, 2025 3:58 pmI turned it on about 7 seconds before he scored. What a snipe. Glad he got it done with a goalie in net from his spot.
He could have had it in the previous game with and empty-netter, but declined and passed it. Said after that he wanted it to be legit.Dave's a mess wrote: Sun Apr 06, 2025 3:58 pmI turned it on about 7 seconds before he scored. What a snipe. Glad he got it done with a goalie in net from his spot.
I have to disagree. It took him a long time to become a well rounded player. He was always a great goal scorer but earlier in his career he had a well deserved reputation as a floater and cherry picker.T.C. wrote: Mon Apr 07, 2025 8:38 amHe could have had it in the previous game with and empty-netter, but declined and passed it. Same exact number of games as Gretzky. Also exactly 45 years to the day that Gordie Howe set his original record of 802. Crazy coincidences. About to reach 3rd all-time in hits, something Gretz certainly never did. This is the greatest all-around player of all time. And he's only 39. Jagr played until what, 53? If Ovi plays a few more seasons, he could easily break 1,000. If he goes iron man and plays, say, 7 more years, he could hit 1100. Insane.
No list of elite players can exist without Ovi on it.BluesSK wrote: Mon Apr 07, 2025 9:43 amI have to disagree. It took him a long time to become a well rounded player. But he definitely did turn it around.
This is all subjective but there are still other players who I think are the elite of the elite. Gretzky, Lemieux, Howe, Orr, Jagr, Messier.

These lists of rankings are always really tough, and super interesting once you get outside the top 4. The top 4 are always some arrangement of Gretzky/Lemieux/Orr/Howe. After that it's wide open. You could go with your preferred GOAT goalie, you could go with the ageless Jagr, you could go with the second greatest defenseman in Lidstrom, you could go with an old time Hab like Richard, and I've seen that spot occupied by the greatest of the last 20 years in Crosby.BluesSK wrote: Mon Apr 07, 2025 10:43 amHe is on the list.Dread_Pirate_Westley wrote: Mon Apr 07, 2025 10:22 amNo list of elite players can exist without Ovi on it.BluesSK wrote: Mon Apr 07, 2025 9:43 am

I've found it's just almost best to do it by era's at this point. But if we are going all time I would have Crosby and Ovi ahead of Messier for sure.Dave's a mess wrote: Mon Apr 07, 2025 10:56 amThese lists of rankings are always really tough, and super interesting once you get outside the top 4. That used to be the type of thing I'd get pretty fired up about, but honestly, all those guys rock. I could talk myself into pretty much any of the guys mentioned and not feel bad about it.
But Messier was such a winner. That's tough.Dread_Pirate_Westley wrote:I've found it's just almost best to do it by era's at this point. Mess wouldn't be in my top 10. No disrespect, a hell of a player but I'm putting Jean Béliveau as far as being a selfless team first winner.BillP. wrote: Mon Apr 07, 2025 11:29 amBut Messier was such a winner. that's not a disagreement - i didn't say anything that was counter to that. i used "is", as in, present tense. no one on that list was a great all-around player from the beginning. everyone has a journey to get there. yes, early on, he was very much a cherry-picker and very evidently only in it for the goals and for himself. i remember the year the new coach in washington put the cuffs on ovi to push him to be much better defensively. i remember him pouting slightly at the beginning, but he bought in and very quickly discovered coach was correct. it was early enough in his career to say that yes, he IS, imo, the greatest all-around player of all time. don't know how there's much of an argument with all-time leading goal scorer and 3rd all-time in hits.BluesSK wrote: Mon Apr 07, 2025 9:43 amI have to disagree. That’s crazy. I’ll have to check that out.stlblues1226 wrote: Tue Apr 08, 2025 9:38 pm Holy shit. What a final 4 minutes in the Vancouver @ Dallas game. Dallas was up 3-0.
With 3 minutes left in the game, Dallas was up 4-2. Vancouver pulls goalie, ENG makes it 5-2. Vancouver gets 3 straight 6 on 5 goals in the last minute. Goes to OT at 5-5. And Dallas just took a slashing penalty in OT. And Vancouver wins in OT at 4 on 4 after the PP ended. Holy shit.
Terrible news. A shocker. So much part of Blues history, from his historical game 5 thriller in the playoffs as a Pen to his time here as a Blue. He was a showman in the nets. A riverboat gambler in challenging shooters, he wasn’t afraid to come out of that net and was a pro in using his stick to disrupt any threat. My sympathy to his family. He was a class act.BluesSK wrote: Mon Apr 07, 2025 6:40 pm Ex Blue Greg Millen dead. RIP

I turned it off at 3-0. Just watched the highlights and holy shit! Literally blew a 5-2 lead with a minute left. Canucks are completely out of it so it doesn't matter at this point but that was incredible to watch. Thanks for the heads up!stlblues1226 wrote: Tue Apr 08, 2025 9:38 pm Holy shit.
