They built marketing campaigns around him for years and made him the face of the franchise. I know this is ridiculous, but I could never find any “hockey” reason to do so.
My assumption was the Blues set a specific value on him and no team was willing to meet it and the Blues weren't interested in compromising for the players interest. The fact they got a 1st for him to be a couple month rental though lets me know he had value around the league so it's not like the Blues were being offered a 3rd for him and decided to not trade him.

Questions we will only be able to speculate at the answers, but I'd sure love to know what if any trade talks occurred last offseason. I need to figure out how to hack Army's phone.

Ever since john elway has been gm or higher the team has been a shit show post-manning.

He got rid of tebow (thankfully) and josh mcdummy and has been awful since

I still think Tebow got screwed. The guy won a playoff game and then got kicked out of the league.
Would of liked to have seen him play another year as a starter and see if he could of build off of that.
Denver not an option since they went and got Manning but maybe somewhere else.
Fuck, the Rams were so bad why not St. Louis? Steven Jackson and Tebow, 2 heavy weights running the option, might of been fun.

At that cap hit 3 years seems dangerous. Who were they negotiating against? I know he's pretty much a 1 of 1 player, but what are the odds his game maintains it's level well into his 30s? He turns 30 in March, only played 33 games last year, and this deal doesn't start until the 24-25 season. Might be a Blues D level disaster. This one is a biiiiiiig yikes for me.

You could have convinced me a 3-4 year deal for him was good, I would've had no issues with that. But 7 years seems crazy. They'll be paying him til he's 38 years old and there's just no way he ages well with his style of play. I feel like we saw this movie already with Lucic. Add to that, I am not even sure the Caps are in an active cup window right now and it seems like an emotional signing of a fan favorite to me but not a smart business move.

It's a business move in the fact that it is an emotional signing of a fan favorite and he will be their last link to the Cup.

Hopefully, 38 year old Robert Thomas won't be our last link to the Cup.

That kid-ball shit doesn't work in the NFL.

We only won 8 games that year bc of the defense and the defensive scheme from defensive-minded john fox's masterpiece.

Tebow, still, for all starting QB's startinf atleast 6+ games, holds the LOWEST accuracy passer rating.

Like Wayne Gretzky's pointz total record, is also a record that will never be beat.

Tebow was drafted by josh mcdummy (the guy that was the lead in every patriots "gate" scandal and the black mark "gate" scandal he did for my broncos, who obviously doesn't know how to football.

Tebow should have NEVER made it to the NFL as QB.

But I digress... This is a hockey forum and i miss my hockey.

We need a filler like basketball has some 3 on 3 thing!

I thought it was a fair deal, until I read it doesn't start until 24-25?!

The caps are NOT in a cup window. They are built to see if Ovy can make history by being famous for what Tony Hawk did - by joining the 900 club

The Caps are heading in the opposite direction of a Cup but at least they have a good incentive and revenue driver in the Ovechkin goals chase.

The upside is, now that this major domino has fallen, perhaps some others on the D market will. Dumba is still unsigned, supposedly because the Karlsson deal was holding things up.
Dumba's play has seemed to tank from all accounts that I see. Still relatively young. Let's get him in on a $6.5x4 and see if he turns things around.

I wasn't implying the Blues should get him, absolutely no room and he's definitely slipped. Also he just signed with AZ.

Another one year deal for a name brand player before the cap goes up. Next summer is going to be wild.

That sounds right, 4M is the most I’d offer Dumba. I don’t know what the heck happened to him. Started off like a gem and then dropped like a market crash. Had 12 goals in like 30 games the year he got hurt and never was the same. Head scratcher.

Karlsson in Pittsburgh will be ultra fun. Hats off to Crosby for being such an unselfish dude. One of the greatest ever and he never cared about getting the most money. I’m rooting for the Penguins next year, I hope they win the Cup.

Matthews has a great agent. He's going to get 3 massive contracts in an era where everybody else is signing long term deals that massively benefit the team after a year or two. He's the highest paid player in the league now, something that was inevitable given the timing of his contract ending relative to McDavid's. More and more stars should start taking this strategy.

Re: News and Games around the NHL

Fascinating signing. Sanderson was the 5th overall pick in 2020. He's only played one year in which he was pretty solid, particularly for a 20 year old. He produced 32 points and saw some PP time. He still has one year left on his entry level deal before the extension kicks in. He's not an $8 million player, but he seems like a likely bet to be one in the not to distant future. Having said that, it's a gamble for a guy that has 77 pro games under his belt. It's a great deal for Sanderson as it bypasses the typical bridge contract and will get him another crack at a huge contract when he's 30. Ottawa is really locking in its young core and supplementing with some solid veterans. I don't know if they get over the hump and get back into the playoffs this year, but I'm sure they'll be a popular pick to do so.

Such roster decisions will increase the relocation value of the franchise. The Atlanta Senators will be stacked from the get-go.
