Looks like they'll be in the market for a Center, and we still haven't locked up Thomas.

He still looks like he has decent upside for a #3 overall pick after just three seasons, but the $6.1 mil offer sheet was more than Montreal could easily match without making some potentially damaging moves to clear cap space, plus it would set the bar for keeping his RFA rights after this season, too. Add to that that Kotkaniemi wasn't happy with how he was being used in Montreal (He was a healthy scratch a couple of times in the playoffs), and openly stated he'd prefer to be in Carolina, and that kind of sealed it.

Nowhere in that story does it say that Lefebvre was "fired" from his position. Hired in June, new restrictions came down from the League offices in August, conditions of employment changed. I reckon their parting satisfied both parties' immediate goals.
