If a team challenges an offsides call and is wrong, the team will now be giving a 2 minute minor penalty.

Re: Failed offsides challenge now a penalty
2This should lead to less offside challenges. So I'm good with it.
Re: Failed offsides challenge now a penalty
3This actually makes a lot of sense. Teams still have a chance to correct a call that they felt was incorrect, while penalizing failed challenges that just kill the pace of the game. And since these usually happen in the playoffs, it will further penalize teams for challenging just for the sake of challenging.

Re: Failed offsides challenge now a penalty
5I think the reason the NHL did not get rid of the challenge all together is just to cover in case a linesman gets the call wrong on a huge goal. The team would still have the opportunity to challenge. I actually think this is the best solution.

Re: Failed offsides challenge now a penalty
6I'm willing to see if this improves the situation, but I still think they should limit the time allowed to the linesmen to review. If they can't see a missed call with one full speed and one slo-mo replay, deny the challenge and get on with the game. One thing this rule change will eliminate is the "challenge the offside non-call since I was going to call a timeout anyway" usage by coaches.
They should have changed the offside rule to begin with so that the skate doesn't have to be making contact with the ice.

Re: Failed offsides challenge now a penalty
7If after a few months of the coming season we see a pattern of Gerard Gallant getting all of his offside challenges upheld, we'll know that the old traditions of Las Vegas have come to the NHL ...

Re: Failed offsides challenge now a penalty
9This is a good idea I'm looking forward to seeing how this will play out. Hopefully challenging an offside will be a rarity now and only be used if the refs miss a blatant offside.

10This 100%. This would eliminate much of the confusion and limit the controversial offside calls. The simpler the better when it comes to replay.barnburner wrote:That's the way I see it also.MissouriMook wrote:
