355St. Louis Blues: A-
The Knights clearly didn't want to give up their 2023 first-round pick here, either to have it as a capital in another deadline deal or to use it themselves this summer. With that off the table, Blues GM Doug Armstrong did the next best thing: got a former first-round pick in Dean, whom the Knights selected 30th overall in 2021 from the Quebec Major Junior League's Gatineau Olympiques.
Dean, 20, is a speedy center and a deft playmaker who has put up impressive offensive numbers in the Q. But he only had three points in seven games at world juniors for Canada.
Armstrong is betting that Dean's offensive prowess can thrive and grow when he makes the leap to the American Hockey League, the next step on his growth curve. If he's right and that eventually leads to an NHL gig, then this could end up looking like a lopsided deal one day down the road.
If he's wrong ... Barbashev wasn't in the plans anyway.

362Torn on this. Chychrun obviously makes the Blues better. But how much? Does he just help us go from a non-playoff team to maybe a wildcard team and we are stuck in hockey pergatory? I'd almost rather just invest in the future. 363Yeah I'm torn as well, but it feels like an Armstrong move. Moving those defenesemen is tricky since they all have some manner of NTCs, but given that they're not competitive at the moment I'm sure some of them would be willing to move to a playoff team. It's tricky, but with so many moves being made already, this is almost all Armstrong has to talk about this week, right?Dread_Pirate_Westley wrote: Mon Feb 27, 2023 10:23 amTorn on this. 364Army pulled off a great move in getting Dean. He’s a good player and has potential. While he wasn’t a huge part of Team Canada he was a part of it and he contributed in a lesser role than he’s used to. Let’s remember that was a stacked team and he made the team to play a role. That says a lot about him.
As for Chychrun, I believe Army is going to get this done. We have the picks needed and I wouldn’t be shocked if Neighbours is also involved. I don’t think they have a need for Bolduc but who knows: We aren’t going to get Chychrun on the cheap..it’s gonna cost us for sure.
I’m just hoping one of our dman is heading somewhere and then we pull off the Chychrun deal.
I want losses to continue to pile up…I want the best possible odds we can have for a shot at Bedard.

365Well said. I saw some media type point out Dean's lack of production at the WJC, but its not as if he's going to be a top line player on a team with Bedard and Fantilli on the roster. You figure if a deal is to be had with AZ it'd involve one of Neighbours or Bolduc, which is fine given that's kind of the only area of depth in our prospect pool. The blueline needs a major shakeup, which is why I'm leaning towards wanting a Chychrun deal to happen despite the high price.NHLTIM wrote: Mon Feb 27, 2023 11:13 am Army pulled off a great move in getting Dean. 371Certainly coupld play a role but he wouldn't have many left to pick from. Bokk is gone. Perunovich holds little value I'd imagine. Robert Thomas is obviously not an option. 13. Colton Parayko
Right Defense, St. Louis Blues
Age: 29
Stats: 56 GP, 3 G, 16 A, 19 Pts
Contract: Seven more seasons, $6.5 million AAV
Scoop: Parayko has been a hot topic in St. Louis as GM Doug Armstrong begins to remake the Blues. There is no doubt that Armstrong would like to find some salary cap flexibility on his blue line. Here’s the thing: Justin Faulk, Torey Krug, Nick Leddy and Parayko all have at least three seasons remaining on their deals. They combine for $23.5 million (28 percent of the cap). They also all have full ‘no-trade’ clauses. Outside of Krug, Parayko is the one likely with the most market value
36. Marco Scandella
Left Defense, St. Louis Blues
Age: 33
Stats: 3 GP, 0 G, 0 A, 0 Pts
Contract: 1 more season, $3.275 million AAV
Scoop: See No. 13 in Colton Parayko. The Blues are dying to create a little cap flexibility on their backend. They’d kill to break free from Scandella’s contract, which seemed to be a mistake signing from jump street. Playing on his third team in 2019-20, after trading 2nd and 4th round picks for him, the Blues signed Scandella to a four-year, $13.1 million deal just two months after acquiring him. It was signed just a few weeks into the pandemic. Scandella has been hurt, hasn’t lived up to his pay, but the Blues will have to pay to move him.

In the first place the Blues could have had him for literally nothing as he was on the waiver wire earlier in that season. Then the contract hamstrung Armstrong from making any beneficial trade or re-signing. It was just a bad mistake that got compounded by more.
I think they move Krug at the deadline. For anything. He's a complementary piece on a lineup that is almost already set. We do not need that now.
He's got value for a team that is knocking on the door that needs a third pairing PP specialist.
