I don't know, when you look at the team they dressed for Game 7, the turnover basically looks like this:
D: Pietrangelo/Edmundson/Bouwmeester -> Krug/Scandella/Faulk
O: Maroon/Steen -> Hoffman/Kyrou
G: Allen -> Husso
To me the drop in their level of play has been much sharper than the drop in talent.
Binnington is not playing at a high level. That roster doesn’t win shit without big time goaltending and that’s what they got. He’s average now. Goaltending can uplift a team. We saw that. And we’re not getting that now. Not that this team is as good as Cup team, but it shouldn’t be on Kings/Coyotes level.
Definitely average. He hasn't put the team on his back for one game since the Cup run.
Both are true. The roster has turned over, much of the remainder has been injured, and Binnington hasn't been above average since December 2019, and has frequently been well below average. The D is easy to play against right now, and so are most of the forwards. The only theory I don't give a ton of credence to on here is the Maroon stuff. Yes he was a great guy in the room and fan favorite, but he was replaceable. In fact, the team was first place in the Western Conference and second overall their first year without him, before falling apart in the bubble. Besides, who's to say the Blues didn't match, but he took the situation with a better tax setup and more sun?
