Dread, that was merely meant for example......no, he isn’t signing for $7 mil, but I’m simply pointing out that even $7 mil/year is a fucking shitload of money. Personally, I don’t care if he stays or goes......but I’d like to see the Blues at least get the chance to defend their title with him in the lineup for the rest of this season.Dread_Pirate_Westley wrote: Fri Apr 17, 2020 9:07 amI think we are going to be sorely disappointed if we believe Petro will be had for 7 million a season. Screw it.....even if he signs an 8-yr deal at “only” $7 mil/season, that’s still a shitload of money. It seems like the cap is going to go down now with the lost revenue. It may make it even harder to find a team willing to give him a mega deal.
If he got any kind of solid offer from the Blues previously and turned it down, he has to be kicking himself right now.
Honestly, the impact of the shutdown on the salary cap might actually make it more likely that he stays with the Blues. I had pretty much assumed that he was gone, but now I’m not so sure.
Re: The Official Petro Contract Speculation Thread
102The Petro thing reminds me of Pujols in 2011. I was sure all year he'd be back. Then one day I turn on ESPN and there he goes. On the other hand, Army has a way of making things work when they seem unlikely. Of course Pujols walking ended up being great for the Cards, so who knows if that part of the metaphor will hold up.
...but whatever, the Blues won the Cup!!!!!

Re: The Official Petro Contract Speculation Thread
105Strickland tweeted today that players were told that the cap is staying flat. So thats something to take into consideration now. There's also been some speculation that the league will allow compliance buyouts next year, in which case Steen is an excellent candidate for one. If they move Allen and buyout Steen, its pretty easy to fit Petro. Who knows whats going to happen though

107They just talked about it on 101 and they are gonna have Lebrun on around 1pm. Basically Petro told Lebrun he’s exploring all his options when free agency hits...whenever that may be.Dread_Pirate_Westley wrote: Mon Apr 20, 2020 12:06 pm Any subscribers care to pass on anything tidbits from this piece?

108If he ends up in a place like Toronto, I can't even fault him. If I was in his position and had the chance to play for my hometown team some day, it'd be hard for me to say no to the Blues.NHLTIM wrote: Mon Apr 20, 2020 12:17 pmThey just talked about it on 101 and they are gonna have Lebrun on around 1pm. Re: The Official Petro Contract Speculation Thread
109There were none, other than he didn't explicitly rule out the one year option since the lower revenue will negatively impact the cap so much this year. Still, he said long term is preferred anyway since he doesn't want to keep his family in the lurch.Dread_Pirate_Westley wrote: Mon Apr 20, 2020 12:06 pm Any subscribers care to pass on anything tidbits from this piece?

Re: The Official Petro Contract Speculation Thread
110I’d say he said pretty much what you would expect.......he would be foolish not to explore all options, but I didn’t see anything that made me pessimistic about him coming back to the Blues. If you still waste time on the other forum, you would hear the opinion that Army has pissed him off. I sure didn’t get that from Petro’s comments. He understands that it’s a business and both sides will move forward accordingly. In the end, it probably comes down to what we all assume (this is my opinion, not anything Petro said)......is he willing to take a little less to stay here, take a shot at another couple of Cups, and retire a legend. If not, I totally wish him the best.
Re: The Official Petro Contract Speculation Thread
111I don't know what, but something about the last few days has made me more sure than ever he's going to re-sign. I think Petro made a pretty big mistake not signing earlier now that we know the cap is going to be flat. But I decided last night to play on CapFriendly to see what it'd take to sign Petro. Its going to be difficult...for the purposes of this, the Blues trade Allen, Gunnarsson, and Bozak and get no salary back. They re-sign Dunn to 3-years, $3.3M AAV, and Pietrangelo to 8 years, $8.75M AAV. That gets us here, still $500K over the cap:
So...my conclusion is that Petro is probably going to end up taking less money than he'd like wherever he ends up signing with the cap staying flat. Even if we drop his AAV to $8.25, my fake Blues team is still slightly over the cap, and thats with trading three guys with no salary in return. Maybe I overrated what Dunn is going to get, knocking him down to say $2.75 makes the math work, so who knows.

113Well yeah, I'm obviously not saying its his fault or that he should have been able to predict it (poor wording on my part). But him and his agent made a gamble (under typical circumstances, a small gamble) of not signing earlier in the season like Josi did, and its probably going to cost him millions of dollars.Dread_Pirate_Westley wrote: Tue Apr 21, 2020 7:51 amHow dare he not predict a global pandemic. 114Curious what, if anything, the Blues were offering him early in the season. From all reports the two sides haven't really talked all season. I'm not sure if that was a mutual decision or the Blues getting the feeling Petro wasn't going to sign early regardless of the offer.UMSLBlues12 wrote: Tue Apr 21, 2020 7:56 amWell yeah, I'm obviously not saying its his fault or that he should have been able to predict it (poor wording on my part). 115No doubt Army has all the leverage now on Petro. For those who preferred seeing Petro walk, you're out of luck. He's not going anywhere now IMO.
Re: The Official Petro Contract Speculation Thread
116I think Army has more leverage, and Petro might have a different perspective about things than he did two moths ago (don’t we all!). Combine that with the way the Backes situation turned out in Boston, and the fact that Petro and Backes are close friends, and I’m guessing Petro is a little more willing to take less to stay here, at least compared to what he might have been thinking before. So I definitely think the odds are better now that he stays......assuming Army is still willing to give an 8-yr deal to a 30-year old.BillP. wrote: Tue Apr 21, 2020 8:09 am No doubt Army has all the leverage now on Petro. Re: The Official Petro Contract Speculation Thread
117He's going to listen to offers and probably give Armstrong a chance to match or come close.
Armstrong's ace in the hole is the ability to give an eight year deal.
FWIW, I think Petro will still be a productive player then if he doesn't play massive minutes from here on.

118He'll probably sign a huge off-season deal in November.

Re: The Official Petro Contract Speculation Thread
119Something else I'm sure Army has to think about is Parayko, who is UFA in two years. He's making $5.5 now, what is he going to get in two years? Are we better setup to let Petro walk and give Parayko the monster 8 year, $8+M year, assuming after Petro is gone and Parayko is getting more ice time and time on the PP he's producing more offense?
