26Yet, if he would have worn blackface he'd be Prime Minister of Canada by now.
Well he got sent down to the ECHL shortly after having a blow up with Peters related to the incident, so while it didn't ruin his career, it certainly helped send it in the wrong direction as a first year pro.BillP. wrote: Tue Nov 26, 2019 5:38 pm What’s also a joke is the guy claiming it ruined his career. I feel like if I worked in a position where my direct boss and the person responsible for my development hated me, I'd be at a big professional disadvantage and have a lot of odds stacked against me. Especially if the line of work was one where the odds of being successful are already stacked against everyone.Dave's a mess wrote: Tue Nov 26, 2019 6:56 pmWell he got sent down to the ECHL shortly after having a blow up with Peters related to the incident, so while it didn't ruin his career, it certainly helped send it in the wrong direction as a first year pro.BillP. wrote: Tue Nov 26, 2019 5:38 pm What’s also a joke is the guy claiming it ruined his career. Huh?
If they are using language like Bill Peters, I sure hope they do. It's time to out this behavior and rid the sport of it.NHLTIM wrote: Wed Nov 27, 2019 7:56 am Just be prepared that perhaps one of your favorite players, coaches, hockey personalities could get called out for something that happened years ago and could be labeled a racist when he was merely joking around with the boys.
I sure as hell don’t want to hear something that happened on a Saskatchewan prairie 30 years ago involving Melrose, Chaser , and Wendel Clark. What you described isn't what is happening though. We don’t know what could happen. All it takes is somebody to say hey “remember that time in Saskatchewan 30 years ago??”
Now John Vanbiesbrouck has been called out. It’s open season. I just don’t see what good comes from possibly labeling someone a racist who’s probably done a lot of good in their life because of that NHL paycheck.
To further your point Tim, in my early 20s, I was a wild as many guys are. Out at bars nightly, I cheated on girlfriends, I drove my car plastered on a regular basis, acted like a drunken ass in public, etc... Today, I am married with a baby. I would never ever ever think or want to cheat on my wife. I uber when I have 3 beers. I have changed my life and values for the better. Should I be vilified for all of the asshole things that I did 10 years ago? Because those things are not a reflection of my personality now. And I absolutely hate some of the things that I did in the past.NHLTIM wrote: Wed Nov 27, 2019 8:19 amI sure as hell don’t want to hear something that happened on a Saskatchewan prairie 30 years ago involving Melrose, Chaser , and Wendel Clark. A few things that are different though--all of those things you're talking about you weren't doing in some sort of professional capacity. Yes, it would obviously be insane if you lost your job today because you did crazy shit when you were 20. Bill Peters is at risk of losing his job because he did crazy shit on the job as a head coach. Its not like you were doing those things in some sort of professional capacity.MattyIce wrote: Wed Nov 27, 2019 8:45 amTo further your point Tim, in my early 20s, I was a wild as many guys are. Just to be clear, what he said was fucked up. I'm not defending it. Not to mention, he sounds like a complete ass. But when you get down to it, everyone on this planet has made BIG mistakes. Everyone has done immoral things. You can forgive yourself for things you have done in the past, but for people in the public eye, you may not get that forgiveness from the masses. I have no idea if Peters is even remorseful for what he said, but if he is, it won't matter. Because he will now be forever labeled a "racist" in a lot of peoples eyes.

As for the Bies, his situation came to light at least a year ago, this isn't a new story on him.
And I agree, it is open season.

First I’ve heard about the Bieser ...at least that I can remember. One thing I know for sure though....there are probably plenty of racial things said in the last 30 years from a sport who’s players and coaches are predominantly white. I don’t believe that locker room jokes and the such make anybody truly a racist although there are some that are I’m sure...I think it’s more likely that it was just the norm for them growing up. Yes I know the Peters situation is vastly different but I just hope it doesn’t turn into “so and so said this and so so said that” type of thing because somewhere along the line somebody will be labeled a racist when they are truly not one. That’s what I don’t want to see.
In this day and age when there are more people of color playing it just doesn’t make sense to ever go that route, especially from an authority figure like Peters.
I also think it comes down to the player as well...what are the odds the boys in our locker room , maybe even Ken Hitchcock made a joke or two in regards to Ryan Reaves ? I would find it hard to believe there wasn’t something jokingly said where all parties didn’t laugh at least one time.
That’s all I’m saying...some stuff should remain private.
I’m talking about locker room jokes. I’m not including Peters in that.Dread_Pirate_Westley wrote: Wed Nov 27, 2019 9:12 amWhy do you keep saying locker room jokes? Bill Peters was not just “razzing the boys”NHLTIM wrote: Wed Nov 27, 2019 9:09 amDread_Pirate_Westley wrote: Wed Nov 27, 2019 8:40 am

That's a really good point about it being in the workplace. Totally different story. And I should have mentioned in my post that I do think he deserves to be fired for what seems to be a growing list. I wasn't trying to say he shouldn't be, just for the record.UMSLBlues12 wrote: Wed Nov 27, 2019 9:04 amA few things that are different though--all of those things you're talking about you weren't doing in some sort of professional capacity. The second important thing is that you're not a public persona. There are (rightfully so) different expectations placed on people who are the faces of organizations, who people look up to as role models due to their positions, etc. Those people's actions stop being a reflection on only themselves, and become a reflection of the organization they represent.
I’m not referring to what Peters said as locker room jokes.usmcaaron wrote: Wed Nov 27, 2019 9:22 amYeah, this is not & never would be construed by any rational person as a "joke"NHLTIM wrote: Wed Nov 27, 2019 9:09 amDread_Pirate_Westley wrote: Wed Nov 27, 2019 8:40 am
