I wonder if we should start a virus thread in OT. Not gonna lie... I'm all virus-ed out. Whatever happens happens. All this shit is beyond our control so why argue about it. I see both sides TBH. All I know is that while everyone was buying TP for their bungholes, I stocked up on stuff for my daughter, beer, and bought a few new vinyls to listen to.

Just for clarity, the first 'confirmed' case of Coronavirus in the USA was in mid-January, after it was initially announced as 'discovered' on Dec 31, 2019 in Wuhan China: Scroll to the bottom of the following page: https://www.pharmaceutical-technology.c ... k-evolved/

or here is another timeline: https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2020/01/ ... 54884.html
That's not clarity because the first known case was tracked back to November and even that's best case considering how the Chinese government suppressed news on it. Patient 0 has not been tracked.
source?

Also, even if it was November, the first case reported in the USA was in January, not March as you had stated. And of course others could have had it before that known case in January, because it wasn't a confirmed separate virus until January, so no testing was available before then of course.
Exactly, so as I said, no one knows how many cases there have been and how many have already had it without knowing.

PS this is just the first known case, not patient 0.

"The first case of someone in China suffering from Covid-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, can be traced back to November 17, according to government data seen by the South China Morning Post."

I called you a dipshit, dumbass. I'm being cautious and not going to any stadium events, so I'll be fine. I'm pretty willing to bet that the United States will not see higher rates of infection than China or Italy, and certainly not 214 million infected and 1.7 million dead.
I never said that. You're creating a strawman.

Your tone in this thread, and the context of your posts, suggest that you think everyone is overreacting and this will be a minor blip. The comments and tone of every medical expert on the planet suggests that you will be proven wrong. Overreacting now, as opposed to underreacting, will save thousands and maybe tens of thousands of lives. On behalf of Planet Earth, I would like to formally apologize to you for your inconvenience.

Common ground? How about common sense. I didn't even start asking questions until I saw some guy quoting a Harvard virologist who said there could be 3-4 billion people infected. Come on...if there is that many people infected there will be 100's of millions dead.

It's not that it is a blip it is that the actual data does not match up with the estimates being thrown around..."millions of lives lost"

There are currently 8273 fatalities from this globally...do you really think there is about to be 900k people in America dying out of nowhere?

I am against it but I’m smart enough to know that’s not socialism when they are gonna get back everything they send out via taxes anyway.
that's awesome, so our taxes will go up to support this spending?? Good to know and glad we no longer have a national budget deficit then here in the USA! And all these big businesses getting handouts...that's surely not a form of socialism is it? I thought capitalism was all about 'survival of the fittest?" I'm not saying 900K people are going to die from this in the US. No one is saying that, at least not here. The only one who is saying that is you when you say others are saying it. Hence, Strawman.

This is really easy to throw out into a conversation like a grenade when you can hide behind the vagueness of your opinion. Care to explain exactly what these "other motives" might be? Please don't tell me that you're one of these kooks that thinks this whole pandemic is just a liberal plot to keep Trump from being re-elected.

When figuring what the future totals of dead might be, consider that the hospitals will soon be operating beyond capacity. Some Doctors and nurses are now tending to patients a without protective gear due to shortages, risking their lives, as well as probably passing the virus onto others, including their families, and it's only going to get worse before it gets better.

I think people making over a certain amount are not getting anything. These checks are not for the rich. I haven’t heard anything about big business getting anything. This money is to help people who’ve lost their jobs or by them some time due to this shutdown as well as help stimulate the economy. The government knows people aren’t going to save that money and the majority will blow it within a week. They are just hoping they spend it on taxable goods and service and not their local drug dealer.
But you’re right ...this is just a little flu outbreak so ask yourself what might the bigger picture really involve here and that’s where it gets pretty scary....or you could just keep believing this is all about a virus.

Are the poor bastards in Italy making decisions on who gets to live and who gets to not have a ventilator today a part of it? If there's an insidious plot behind this, what exactly is it?

Now are people going to take advantage of a shitty situation at the expense of their fellow humans? Absolutely. Just look at the rotten fucks who bought up a shit ton of sanitizer to try and gouge prices. It's pathetic. But I don't believe in conspiracies, we just aren't competent enough to manufacture anything on the scale you're vaguely suggesting. I believe that people are opportunists. I don’t pretend to know what’s going on in Italy...if you’re old and not in great health and get this virus, it’s obviously not a good situation. The virus is not in question...it’s very real. I only question what is going on over here. My wife’s grandpa is 94 and in a nursing home so this is could be a very real situation for me and my family but that doesn’t mean It changes my stance on the fear and mass panic. I just think there is more to it. That’s all I’m going to say. Everybody is free to believe what they wish.
