after that first season, i was really excited about him and the potential to be a real impact player. but now, years later, i think i'm done with him. yes, i know he plays a lot of minutes. but i am really sick of wishing he's use his shot, wishing he's use his size, hoping he'll start playing angry at some point. it just isn't going to happen. so unless berube starts putting glass in the bottom of parayko's skates - i don't know what else would piss this guy off - he can take his lady byng style of play somewhere else. sick of waiting for this guy to decide to play hockey and not tennis on ice.

I really like Berube's opting to go with 7 D. Some of those guys are much more effective if you keep their minutes down. Then he's got Perunovich to insert as a power play specialist without having to worry about whether he's ready for 5-on-5 Stanley Cup playoff minutes. Chief seems to be getting the best out of a thin defense.

The biggest myth that ever went around Blues fandom was that Parayko was ever going to be Pronger-lite. I is, always has been and always will be a slightly larger right handed version of peak Bouwmeester. When you re-calibrate for that comparison you'll be way less disappointed in something that was never going to happen in the first place.

He never seems to panic. Just picks his next option, and keeps going. He never seems to berate his players. Criticize their play? Sure, but when you're guilty, it's hard to complain about being called out.

Berube just seems to be so comfortable behind a bench. While surely things have changed some since his playing days, he still clearly understands dressing room dynamics. Compare that with a guy like Hitch, who had a great deal of success and was a high level X and O coach, he just wore out his players at every stop eventually. That's far from an uncommon thing in the NHL, so it's nice to have a guy like Berube that the team enjoys playing for, but probably has just the right amount of fear of.

He knows that the kid has the potential to be a monster goal scorer, but for whatever reason he isn't.... not that his numbers are that bad on paper, but he will be an awesome player if the game ever slows down for him. Hitch would have given up on him by now, and told Army to trade him for a 38 year old grinder. it's funny you bring up bouwmeester, that's exactly the comparison i was thinking last night while watching him. which, again - i understand that's a high caliber player. but that really only works with what has historically been the blues' style when paired with a physical, aggressive-playing defenseman. who is that? having top D that constantly avoid hits, allow opposing players to hang around the crease, and refuse to hammer their heavy slapshot does not bode well for a team, methinks.
