If he's a top 1/2 keeper in the league over the length of the deal it's a beauty. He's capable. I like it.

6x6 is the exact deal Jakob Markstrom got this summer. This was pretty much always going to be the deal he was going to get. It's a terrifying deal, but I think it is market price.

Structure details:
Not super painful to buyout the last couple years if it goes South. No signing bonus keeps Armstrong's streak in tact. O'Reilly is the only Blues player with signing bonuses, and obviously that wasn't an Armstong contract.
I will be nervous about this deal until Binnington shows some long term consistency. He can make me feel super comfortable with a strong finish to this season.

I recently watched the seventh game to win the cup, and honestly it was just a great performance by him. But goalies are fucked in the head so I guess time will tell if this is a good signing or not.

"Jordan Binnington, who came from off the bench to lead the Blues to the franchise's first Stanley Cup in 2019, on Thursday signed a six-year contract extension with an average annual value of $6 million.
Binnington would have been an unrestricted free agent after the season. He had signed a two-year contract with an annual average value of $4.4 million after the Stanley Cup season.
Getting their star goaltender under contract was a major issue for the Blues, who had only one other goalie, the inexperienced backup Ville Husso, under contract.
"It came together really quickly when we started it," Blues general manager Doug Armstrong said. "Jordan is obviously a top goalie in the league, he's got the pedigree of a champion and to have him locked up through the meat of his career, six years starting at (age) 28 through 33, it's a good feeling."
It's been a long trip for Binnington to get to this point. Binnington, 27, was drafted by the Blues in the third round (88th overall) in 2011. In 2017-18, when the Blues didn't have an affiliated farm team, the team wanted to send him to the ECHL to get games, but he balked and the team ended up loaning him to Boston's Providence farm team, where he got only a little work.
In 2018-19, Husso was the top goalie prospect in the Blues system, but when the team decided to replace struggling backup Chad Johnson, Husso was struggling as well, and Binnington got the callup. After sitting on the bench while Jake Allen started 14 straight games, Binnington made his first NHL start on Jan. 7, a 3-0 win at Philadelphia, and started the team on a path to its first Stanley Cup."

Well he's clearly in the top 10 or so starters so I have no problem with this. Always hate giving a lot of money to goalies but you gotta pony up at some point.

Army putting his chips in and gambling that he just bought himself another low cost/high reward contract. This team is built on bargain deals, and Army thinks he just added another. I hope he’s right.

i just can't believe they are counting last year against contracts.
binner is a headcase, but when he's on, he's on, and this deal looks great. remains to be seen how his goaliness manifests itself in the next couple years. but as has been said, he's still top 10 in the league regardless, so no issues here. length is a weird one considering how steadfast army has been about contract length. shrug.

So after looking around at recent goalie signings, this deal should've been pretty easy to predict. Hellebuyck, Martin Jones and Markstrom all signed 6 year deals ranging from $5.75-$6.16 per year. As you can tell from that list, the quality of those contracts runs the gamut. Hellebuyck could have won the Hart trophy last year, while Martin Jones has been so bad SJ brought in Dubnyk...statistically the worst goalie in the league last year by some measures...to split time with him.
Binner's deal is a fair contract at this moment. Goalies being goalies, it seems like it will end up either being a big win or an albertross for the Blues. Things can change quickly in either direction. John Gibson's 8 year deal looked like a home run for the Ducks when he signed it, but he's been about a .900 save% goalie since. Disaster contracts include Bobrovsky, Corey Schneider's previous deal, Matt Murray, and probably Carey Price. Meanwhile Fleury, Vasilvesky and Rask's last deal look like steals despite high Cap Hits. That last bit should tell you something. It's a bit of a chicken or the egg situation, but if the team is strong defensively, long term goalie contracts aren't quite as problematic. Next step to making this contract and team at large look great is getting Parayko's back healed up.

Even if Binner shits the bed , he deserved this contract. Glad it’s wrapped up and that Army can focus on other things now.

According to todays article in the PD, Binnington went into negotiations, with the view that he did not want to cripple the organization, cap wise. He wanted to leave enough room that they could continue to keep this team strong. Well done, Binner! Now go win us another 3 or 4 Cups!

People on Twitter acting like $6M per is a ton for a goalie...its the 10th highest cap hit in the league. And Binnington is easily in the top 10 as far as goalies go.

If that's the case then Binner is patting himself on the back quite a bit. Did he think he's a 8 or 9 million goalie?
