Blues Offseason Trades/Signings Thread

So we already had specific threads for Petro talk and the Allen trade, but none for deals like this:

I assume it's a one-way contract. Nice enough bit of depth and saves some cap room relative to last year. That gives the Blues 15 forwards under contract at the NHL level for next year if you include the injured Tarasenko and assume Kyrou is part of the big club going forward.
...but whatever, the Blues won the Cup!!!!!

I hope this doesn't mean that Kostin won't start out next season with The Blues.

Robb, a bunch of teams are doing the same.....not all to the KHL (I’ve seen Germany and a few other places). Teams just want to make sure their better prospects get plenty of ice time, given the uncertain timing of training camp and next season. Kostin will be here for training camp, and hopefully he sticks with the Blues.

From JRs athletic piece: https://theathletic.com/2095165/2020/09 ... ed_article#

Let’s first address what some are saying about Faulk.

There’s a consensus around the NHL that wonders why Armstrong traded for and signed Faulk to a seven-year, $45.5 million extension. The 28-year-old certainly had a difficult adjustment after joining the Blues, and though he showed some signs of improvement during the playoffs, it was nothing to quell the concern.

Faulk was signed before the pandemic, which the club obviously never could have anticipated, but what adds frustration to the situation nonetheless is that with ownership losing millions in the wake of the pause, the defenseman’s actual salary is $9 million in each of the first two years of the deal.

The Blues would undoubtedly keep Faulk if they were unable to re-sign Pietrangelo, but there’s scuttlebutt that the former Carolina Hurricanes defenseman could be in play if Pietrangelo stays.

Could this be another circumstance, though, in which Armstrong is asked to retain salary in the contract? It seems far-fetched that the Blues would consider it with seven years left on the deal, but sources believe that Faulk could be moved if the team were willing to pay $2 million to $2.5 million per season. Many say that would be admitting a mistake, so the odds are extremely long, but they still believe the possibility still exists. There’s also the option of leaving him exposed in the NHL expansion draft next offseason, but that would come after the potential re-signing of Pietrangelo.

If he was signed as protection against Petro leaving, then you could certainly argue that Army would move him if Petro is staying. Despite the fucking hysteria surrounding Faulk, he was a pretty good player in Carolina, so I’m guessing there would be interested teams.

On the other hand, every time JR writes something about The Petro situation, it smells like yet another stop on the Petro PR train. JR has been sucking his dick pretty hard lately.

Eklund (so take it with a block of salt) suggesting that the NHL is looking at ways to give teams some cap relief for next season, maybe two. Also looking at possible ways of helping teams, given the lack of revenue. Sounds like wishful thinking, and I haven’t seen it anywhere else.......but if the NHL does something cap-related, that could change the Petro situation for the Blues.

0% chance that happens after League/PA just agreed to CBA in March.

Just passing it along......hence the “block of salt” comment.

About the only plausible situation I could foresee would be the league temporarily allowing teams to sell cap space to (and conversely purchase cap space from) other teams to maintain compliance. Selling teams could still count sold space against the floor and buying teams could get to exceed the cap by the amount of space purchased to maintain cap compliance without changing that part of the rules.

This would appease the NHLPA by keeping the same total salaries in play across the league, potential increasing the utilization of cap space at a time when more teams might have an internal budget. I can't see a situation where teams would be allowed to buy or sell more than 10%-15% of the total cap (currently $8.15M to $12.23M), nor could I see this being allowed to continue more than 2-3 years (the time frame the cap is expected to remain flat) given the competitive imbalance it would create, but it might be a way for the lesser funded teams to stay afloat while the better funded teams get to exploit more of the cap. Parity would be out the window, but it would be a win-win otherwise for the owners and the PA.

Forgot about this guy........................

With no clear idea of when the next hockey season will start, either at the NHL or AHL level, the Blues moved to keep another young forward playing by loaning Alexei Toropchenko to HC Kunlun Red Star of the Kontinental Hockey League.

The Blues are able to recall Toropchenko whenever the NHL season resumes.

Though Kunlun is based in Beijing, they are playing this season in a suburb of Moscow, which is where Toropchenko is from, because of the pandemic.

Toropchenko joins Klim Kostin, another Blues prospect who was loaned to the KHL. Kostin is playing with Avangard Omsk, and has an assist in two games so far.

Both are with teams with coaches with NHL connections. Omsk Avangard is coached by former NHL coach Bob Hartley and Kunlan is coached by former NHL player Alexei Kovalev.

Toropchenko, was drafted by the Blues in the fourth round (No. 113 overall) in 2017. He had five goals and four assists in 59 games with San Antonio in the AHL last season, his first full pro season.
