Yeah, with Berube, it's all about the TEAM CONCEPT. Right now, Berube is the one who is indispensable.

So a couple points. I don't know how much of an effect this really had, but the shitty start of the Cup season coincided with having newborn triplets at home at the Pietrangelo house. I'm sure they can afford a live in nanny if they wanted one (no clue if they had one) and I'm sure they have nice sound proof walls, but I cannot imagine that is conducive to peak physical performance. Secondly, It's one thing to take a slightly lower than market offer to keep a winner together, but $7.4M/5 years is potentially leaving $22M on the table (assuming he could get $8.5/7 on open market). To me that goes beyond chasing the dollar. Those extra 2 years are big for a guy that's 30 already.

Also one thing that'll be different this year as opposed to Stamkos/Tavares when it was there turn, there's no free agent interview period. Those two were able to talk with other teams for a week prior to free agency opening up. With the condensed offseason, that's been scrapped this year, so it'll be the old school model where floods of offer come in once the signing period officially opens up.

Now I'm not saying I'm fully on board with paying Petro $8.5/8, the last few years scare me given that they've already got a few long term deals and it's unclear how strong the youth movement is going to be beyond Thomas being a keeper. But if the Blues don't offer more than the deal mentioned in JR's chat, I absolutely cannot fault him for looking elsewhere.

Not looking great for the statue.
Wow, Army basically telling Petro thanks for the memories. Man I give him credit. Letting Petro walk gives the Blues a better chance at remaining a contender in the future. Much better than riding off into the sunset and saddling yourself with fading stars like the Hawks and Kings did.

yeah, don't get me wrong - i'm not begrudging him. you are a Cup-winning captain, go get paid! but don't think that somehow STL is going to pay you whatever you want, that you can hold us hostage. get dat cash, just not here, if that's what you're about. if you do decide to stay here because you love it so much and in doing so you do leave $22MM on the table, you are a goddamn idiot and will instantly regret it.

I hate to say it...but its true. Sure Pietrangelo deserves to get paid...but that really hamstrings the team...and it has to be nice to fret over getting an extra $22 million on top of your massive fortune you are being paid. The NHL has made expensive long term deals very detrimental to being competitive.

Agreed......and the prospect of a flat cap, or minimal growth, after next season, makes it even more difficult to hand out those deals. The fact is that nobody expected Covid and the implications of it on the salary cap. If it hadn’t happened and the cap went up as originally expected, Petro might already be signed.

Sucks for him, no doubt, but the guy is still going to get a fat damn paycheck regardless. Even if he gets “insulted”, he will be getting a raise of $1-$2 million per year over his current salary. Fuck, I can’t remember the last time I had a real raise. My industry changed, and so did the paychecks. I’ve adjusted to it just fine, but I’m not thrilled by it. If Petro leaves for a bigger offer, I wouldn’t criticize him at all, but thing have changed for the NHL, and he and his agent are smart enough to know that.

Petro doesn't hamstring the team. Justin Faulk does.

You’ll like JF when he assumes a bigger role on team. I think both him and Parayko will embrace their new roles.

Pretty interesting that the Lightning are going to go to the Final and most likely win the Cup.......with retreads like Bogosian, Schenn, and Shatty making up half of their top 6. Of course Hedman is absolutely outstanding, but I still think there is an interesting message there.

The lesson is "if you score the most goals in the league and have a top 3 defenseman and top 3 goalie you can save some cap space on your bottom 3 D".

Back to Petro. I just imagined I was in his shoes and it all became clear to me.

Option A: Sign with Blues, likely contend a couple more years, continue to build on tremendous legacy in St. Louis.
Option B: Take a lot more money and move hundreds or thousands of miles away from in-laws.

Thanks for the Cup Petro! Looking at it from that perspective there's no way I could ever hold leaving against him.

Pretty much agree with both of you. No doubt that Petro raised his questionable impact to a plus level under Chief, so if he's willing to accept a workable contract, great. If not, best of luck elsewhere. Not prepared to handicap this team for 8 or more years just to keep him here, and I doubt Army is either.

I'm sure they're talking, they trade relatively frequently. I'm also nearly 100% sure they're not talking Pietrangelo since Dubas can get him for nothing in a few weeks. Additionally if they do trade his rights it wouldn't be for a huge asset like Nylander since, as mentioned, they can get him for free shortly thereafter. I see no world in which he's traded to the Leafs for anything more than like a 3rd round pick.

Heard JR on the radio today and he gave an update on the Petro situation. A few notes (some old, some new):
-He believed the AAV on latest offer from Blues was $7.7
-Thinks Petro would take hometown discount but wants other terms in favor
-Petro wants to stay but definitely frustrated by negotiations
-League-wide belief is he could make more elsewhere

To me the primary sticking point has to be term. If he's willing to take a discount, and you figure in flat cap his market value is $8.5 AAV, $7.7 is probably close enough that they can meet at or near that number if the contract were long enough for Petro's liking. I believe JR had reported earlier that there had been a 5 year offer from Blues. If that $7.7 AAV offer was only for 5, I'd imagine that's still the primary sticking point. I'm sure Petro will want as much no-trade protection as he can get as well, but that would seem to be of secondary importance from my uninformed chair.

If you give him the term what is the worst thing that happens...he is eventually on the third pairing? That is the price you have to pay to lock in talent.
