Basically its so the lottery odds would be the same as they were at the beginning of the season. Detroit still had the best odds, but there were 8 placeholder teams that cumulatively had higher odds. Specifically, "Team E" was the winner of the lottery. In a way this was actually the simplest way to so it, besides just waiting for the play-in round to be over, which easily would have been the simplest solution.
...but whatever, the Blues won the Cup!!!!!

Yep......didn’t want him in our division, and screw Edmonton, so glad to see it be the Rangers. Still a ridiculous situation that can only happen in the NHL!
