Petro was turning into SHIT before Berube took over. If Berube gets canned in the next couple years, it's buyer beware on Petro. Berube brought the best out of Petro. Would that carry over without the Chief? I wouldn't bet on it. Just sayin..............
that's my take too. we'll be fine. sucked when we lost chopper. sucked to lose pronger. i'm sure the wings hated losing lidstrom. but shit happens. chief has proven he can make players into the best versions of themselves. which he would do with whomever was left on D, or someone new. if petro wants to chase money and his wife after three triplets, have fun pal. see you on the other side of the ice.
So a couple points. I don't know how much of an effect this really had, but the shitty start of the Cup season coincided with having newborn triplets at home at the Pietrangelo house. I'm sure they can afford a live in nanny if they wanted one (no clue if they had one) and I'm sure they have nice sound proof walls, but I cannot imagine that is conducive to peak physical performance. Secondly, It's one thing to take a slightly lower than market offer to keep a winner together, but $7.4M/5 years is potentially leaving $22M on the table (assuming he could get $8.5/7 on open market). To me that goes beyond chasing the dollar. Those extra 2 years are big for a guy that's 30 already.
Also one thing that'll be different this year as opposed to Stamkos/Tavares when it was there turn, there's no free agent interview period. Those two were able to talk with other teams for a week prior to free agency opening up. With the condensed offseason, that's been scrapped this year, so it'll be the old school model where floods of offer come in once the signing period officially opens up.
Now I'm not saying I'm fully on board with paying Petro $8.5/8, the last few years scare me given that they've already got a few long term deals and it's unclear how strong the youth movement is going to be beyond Thomas being a keeper. But if the Blues don't offer more than the deal mentioned in JR's chat, I absolutely cannot fault him for looking elsewhere.
